Dhaka, Feb 18 (bdnews24.com)—Railway minister Suranjit Sengupta has said warned of legal actions against the conspirators who are leaving no stone unturned to foil the ongoing war crimes trial.

“The trial of those who had wanted to tear down the country by killing the helpless and innocent people [during the 1971 war] must be held on the soil of the country,” the senior Awami League leader at a discussion on Saturday.

Suranjit called on the law ministry to formulate a transparent law that will allow bringing to justice those who are opposing the trial of the war criminals and trying to foil it.

Parliament on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution seeking legal provisions for punishing the people who are creating obstruction to the ongoing trials of suspected war criminals.

The ruling Awami League has long been saying that the BNP-Jamaat alliance is conspiring to obstacle the war crimes tribunal.

Bangabandhu Academy organised the programme at Diploma Engineers’ Institution in the city in remembrance of Jahangir Sattar Tinku, a veteran of the pro-democracy movement against the autocratic rule of former president H M Ershad during the 1990s. He died on Feb 8 due to brain cancer.

Suranjit said that Tinku was one of the heroes of the democratic movements. “The Awami League has been established through the sacrifices of people like him.”

The government formed the International Crimes Tribunal, lawyers’ panel and an investigation committee on Mar 25 last year to try the 1971 war criminals.

Jamaat-e-Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary-general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed, executive council member Delwar Hossain Sayedee, assistant secretaries-general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Molla, BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and former member of BNP founder Gen Ziaur Rahman’s cabinet Abdul Alim were arrested on charges of crimes against humanity.

The tribunal has already framed charges against Sayedee.

The tribunal, however, on March 31 granted conditional bail to Abdul Alim.

Former lawmaker and Awami League leader Hazi Selim, Abdul Jalil and Mozaffar Hossain Paltu were also present on the occasion.
