After 10 years in operation, the International Criminal Court (ICC) delivered its first verdict this week, convicting the Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga of recruiting child soldiers in the long and brutal conflict that has festered at the center of Africa. One of 15 defendants before the ICC, its ruling in the Lubanga case brings to a close part of the Court’s original push for indictments that began in 2005, when it issued its first arrest warrant for Joseph Kony.
The confluence of the Kony 2012 campaign and Lubanga’s conviction …

It is hard to look at the International Criminal Court’s conviction of former Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga for enlisting child soldiers into his militia more than a decade ago and not consider it a positive step on the road towards justice. Perhaps, too, it marks a point where it is time for a conversation about some fundamental international justice questions: What is justice and justice at what cost?
The Lubanga verdict, a first for the decade-old International Criminal Court, comes on the heels of the viral YouTube video Kony2012 that introduced …

Over the last few months there have been a number of decisions by the ICTY in cases involving contempt of the Tribunal. Cases of contempt of the Tribunal fall under Rule 77 of the ICTY Rules of Procedure and Evidence, entitled ‘Contempt of the Tribunal’. Part of this Rule, which has been amended several times over the years to allow the Tribunal to respond to different situations, provides as follows:
(A) The Tribunal in the exercise of its inherent power may hold in contempt those …

Toby Cadman is a barrister who makes his living representing those accused of war crimes. He is presently instructed by the Jamaat-e-Islami genocidaires, whose war crimes trial is currently being bungled by the Bangladesh government
Whatever you may think of his clients, Toby Cadman is performing a very important function in any system of justice. The Bangladesh Government, for example, is failing to meet international standards in relation to its tribunal, and Toby Cadman is one of those properly …

A respected Bangladeshi academic recently said to me that these days in Bangladesh it was not enough to simply voice ones support for the international crimes tribunal. In order to gain the approval of the more ardent ICT campaigners and government supporters, one must use the exact words, language and tone that they themselves use when they talk about it. There is an expected script, he said, and deviation from it invites harsh criticism, ostracism and sometimes worse.
I was reminded of …

The Bangladeshi army revealed today that it had foiled a coup attempt linked to Islamist extremists last month.
Army officials said they uncovered a plot by 16 serving and retired military officials who conspired to overthrow the elected Sheikh Hasina government in order to establish an Islamist regime. While Bangladesh has a history of military coups, this is the first known attempt by Islamist extremists within the military to overthrow the government.
The coup attempt has been linked to the Hizbut Tahrir (HUT), an international organization that seeks to establish a global …

Bangladesh Army, another name of Independence of Bangladesh, is passing a transitional phase. Its sufferings in the recent past from the BDR carnage were the beginning of it. Now, it seems, the transition is coming to a positive end.
The BDR Carnage:
The BDR carnage was a planned massacre on the Army to eliminate many of the bright, upright and capable officers to render it unable to defend the independence of Bangladesh anymore. Some of the corrupt political leaders including few of the Generals and Senior …
