Mueen-Uddin allegedly linked to crimes during 1970s

Faces death sentence if convicted

One of Britain’s top Muslim activists is facing war crimes charges in Bangladesh.
Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin, the director of Muslim spiritual care provision in the NHS and a trustee of the charity Muslim Aid, is accused of involvement in the abduction and murder of ‘intellectuals’ during Bangladesh’s struggle for independence in the 1970s.
Mr Mueen-Uddin has denied any involvement in the crimes he has been allegedly linked with – but faces the death penalty if convicted.

LONDON: Three noted British journalists will leave for Dhaka on April 7 at the invitation of the Bangladeshi government.
They are—Daily Telegraph`s London Editor Andrew Gilligan, Guardian`s environment Editor John Vidal and freelance journalist on politics and defense Chris Blackburn.

Pakistanis specially journalists welcomed Bangladesh’s initiatives to try 1971 war criminals and urged their government to seek formal apology for their misdeeds.
Three Pakistani journalists and an NGO activist hold the same opinion in exclusive interviews with the news agency on the sidelines of an international conference held in Sri Lanka recently.

Strong political will and people’s participation are imperative to ensure justice in a court, which tries war criminals, an international crimes tribunal expert said yesterday.

Srinagar: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani Tuesday urged the Bangladeshi government to release Jamat-Islam Professor Ghulam Azam and other Jamat-e-Islami leaders urgently from jails, saying their arrest for alleged war crimes was an act of “political vendetta.”
