50 years ago, on a dark night of 25 March in 1971, a vicious genocidal campaign was unleashed on the innocent Bengali people. 50 years later, on that same date, we have arranged this meeting to commemorate the 1971 genocide, and to discuss ways to effectively campaign and lobby worldwide for its formal global recognition at the official level.

BACKGROUND:
Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971 came at too high a price. During the country’s nine-month War of Liberation against the occupying Pakistani forces, an estimated 3 million Bengalees were killed, more than 400,000 women and girls were subjected to sexual violence, and around 10 million people suffered forced displacement. It was a direct consequence of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes perpetrated by the Pakistani forces and their local collaborators in those nine months. Forty six years later, in 2017, the Government of Bangladesh declared 25 March as the National Day of Genocide Commemoration in honour of the victims and survivors of the war. While there had already been two formal accountability mechanisms to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of 1971, the genocide itself is yet to gain the global recognition that it deserved. Synchronised interventions both from Bengali diaspora and the Government of Bangladesh will be instrumental to ensure the long overdue recognition of 1971 Bangladesh Genocide.

আজ থেকে ৫০ বছর আগে ২৫ মার্চ ১৯৭১ এর সেই কালরাতে নিরস্ত্র নিরপরাধ বাঙ্গালীর উপর ইতিহাসের ভয়ংকরতম গণহত্যার সূচনা করেছিল পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনী আর তাদের এদেশীয় দোসররা। ৫০ বছর অতিবাহিত হবার পর, সেই একই তারিখে, ১৯৭১ এর গণহত্যার ৫০-তম বর্ষকে সামনে রেখে, আগামী ২৫ মার্চ ২০২১ তারিখে আমরা আয়োজন করেছি এ আলোচনার। আমাদের আলোচ্য বিষয় দু’টো: ১৯৭১ এর গণহত্যার স্মরণ, এবং ১৯৭১ এর গণহত্যার বৈশ্বিক স্বীকৃতি অর্জনে আমাদের কর্মসূচী নির্ধারণ।
